What is IUI?
Intrauterine insemination, or IUI, is a fertility treatment and it involves the placement of sperm inside the uterus of a woman to facilitate fertilization. In certain situations, donor sperm may be used. This simple procedure enables healthy sperm to come closer to the egg. Your doctor may give you some ovulogens or fertility drugs and monitor your ovulation cycle via transvaginal ultrasound scanning.
Once the follicles and endometrial lining attain the optimum size, you will be given a trigger and the IUI will be performed. Prior to starting your IUI cycle, your spouse’s semen analysis would be done to find out if some medication is required to increase the motility and/or count of the spermatozoa. In addition, the doctor will ensure tubal patency by performing a hysterosalpingogram (HSG)/sonohysterography (SSG) or laparoscopy before starting your IUI cycle.
IUI is a relatively faster method and is often performed without anaesthesia in the doctor's office. In general, the procedure does not cause any pain to you. However, some women might experience mild discomfort.
Candidates for IUI Treatment
IUI Treatment – Procedure
Before starting the IUI procedure, sperm from your partner is collected and prepared. The next step is to prepare you for IUI treatment. Your cervix and vaginal tissues are cleaned with the help of a mild cleaning solution. The washed sperm is then taken in a syringe which is attached to a small catheter. The catheter is inserted through your cervix and sperm is injected into your uterus. Once the process is completed, the catheter and speculum are retracted. You may be asked to rest for a while before leaving the hospital.
Generally, the procedure is carried out without any kind of medication. However, some patients may have to be given ovulation-stimulating medication. In such cases, the doctors will monitor the condition of the eggs and perform the procedure at the time of ovulation.
What to Expect Post-IUI Treatment
After the procedure, your doctor may prescribe progesterone medication for you. Typically, it is to be administered by way of a vaginal suppository. About one week after the treatment, your doctor may order a blood test to check your progesterone, oestrogen, and hCG levels. Your doctor may ask you to get a pregnancy test done 10 to 14 days following the IUI treatment. Sometimes, your doctor might suggest a home test.
IUI Success Rate in Hyderabad
The experience varies from one patient to another. Therefore, it is difficult to predict the success of the process. Furthermore, the success rate is dependent on factors such as age, cause of infertility, use of infertility drugs, and other fertility problems. Besides, the success rate of IUI treatment is low in women in the age group of 35 to 40 years. The IUI success rate is the same as that of a fertile couple achieving pregnancy naturally. The likelihood of conception after one cycle of IUI is approximately 10% to 20%.
